Historical sites in Tel aviv

By: Amir Yarkoni

Short but intense history did Tel Aviv go through…

While Tel Aviv cannot boast a history as long as Paris or London’s, it does have a brief yet very rich history of youth, re-birth, creation, war, and modernization. Tel Aviv is a reflection of the new state of Israel itself and as such, it underwent virtually all the marvelous chain of events that occurred in this Middle Eastern small piece of land over the last 120 years.

The Founding of Tel Aviv

Founded in 1909 during the times of the Ottoman (Turkish) empire rule over palestine, Tel Aviv is considered the first Hebrew city in the land of new Israel.

Tel Aviv was actually spawned out of Jaffa, then the main port city. The hard living conditions in Jaffa drove a group of Jewish newcomers to move out of Jaffa, establishing "achuzat bai't" in the northern border of Jaffa. "Achuzat bai't" was the first neighborhood of the new Tel Aviv.

The influx of Jewish immigrants from Europe in the years 1924-1939 has boosted Tel Aviv as a major city, and gave it its yuppie and outgoing character, which still holds true today. This spirit is still a source of attraction to many young Israelis who immigrate to Tel Aviv from all over the country, to live a few years in the big city of Israel before settling down.

Tel Aviv "the white city"– a world heritage site

Tel-Aviv Building style

Tel Aviv is home to over 5000 Bauhaus buildings - the largest concentration in one city in the world. In recent years the city is undergoing a massive re-construction/preservation effort, which has earned it a "world heritage site" by Eunesko. "The white city" is named so in account of the the bright colors of the building style: white, off-white, light yellow. The Bauhaus building style was actually imported from Germany where it came to an abrupt end with the Nazi rise to power.

The Bauhaus architecture flourished in Tel Aviv during the 20's and 30's of the 1900's, and it had been beautifully reconstructed in many parts of south (old) Tel Aviv. Visit Rothschild Boulevard with its impressive structures, which today are mostly occupied by investment banks and others resourceful entities…continue your tour through Ehad hh'am and Lilinblum streets to be impressed by the stylish buildings, now back to their glorious days…

Take a day to visit to the old reconstructed areas of Neve tzedek, Rothschild, Ehad ha'am area and Jaffa to enrich yourself with this special building culture which was carefully preserved. The re-constructed area is essentially small in size so walking around is a viable option…
